Gatorama in Palmdale

A popular stop for travelers coming to the junction of SR 29 and US 27, Palmdale is the home of Gatorama, one of Florida’s oldest roadside attractions, and the Fisheating Creek Resort.

Settled in 1901 by the Florida Fruit Farm, Palmdale had a general store and post office along the railroad, which was extended south from Sebring in 1917 to serve local agricultural interests – citrus growers and ranchers. Palmdale sits equidistant between Moore Haven, Lake Placid, and LaBelle

In Palmdale, you’ll find the popular Fisheating Creek Resort, set in the center of 18,272 acres of wildlife management acreage on the banks of the 52-mile-long pristine Fisheating Creek. Fisheating Creek Resort offers RV sites and tent camping and hiking, hunting and canoe trails and a store on site. Another campground in Palmdale is the Sabal Palm RV Resort and Campground, where campers can enjoy true wilderness camping in the comfort of a full-service campground with a spacious bathhouse, laundry facilities and a paddock for horses.

Opened in 1957, Gatorama is a must-stop for travelers headed through Palmdale. Step back into time to when roadside attractions were king in Florida and visit one of the largest collections of large alligators and crocodiles in the United States.

Palmdale was also once famously known as the location of Tom Gaskin’s Cypress Knee Museum, another classic roadside attraction which shuttered its doors more than a decade ago.
