Originally dredged in 1915 to support barging material to build the original Moore Haven Locks, the Moore Haven Canal will be dredged again beginning in 2010 and widened to 80 feet, with spoil materials used to create a hiking trail, with observation tower and restrooms, seven miles into the marshes along Lake Okeechobee’s rim. Water taxis will ferry hikers from the canal to the marina.
