Founded by James A. Moore in 1915, the city of Moore Haven sits on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. In May 1916, Moore commissioned surveyor T.E Frederick to create a plat for town, which is about a square mile in size.

The Moore Haven Residental Historic District sits between Avenues J and M and First Street to Fifth Street. The 40 historic buildings have survived both a devastating fire in 1921 and a hurricane in 1926 that severely flooded the downtown area. Some are still used as residences and others await renovation or reconstruction.
